“Sidelines (Gone)” é daquelas músicas de falar ao coração sobre os desgostos amorosos. Sobre as expectativas que se criam em paralelo e que depois nunca se vêem cumpridas. Aos ritmos suaves, entre a harmonia e a urgência, junta-se uma que expressa na perfeição a mensagem que passa na letra. E a mensagem tem origem num belo Verão:
Me.Kai and I wrote this song during a perfect and wild summer at UC Santa Barbara. We’d go directly from skateboarding on the beach to writing this moody track in my dimly-lit and stuffy bedroom. It’s sort of an amalgamation of both of our weird love lives at the time. The narrator has a very real, pseudo-romantic connection with another person who is in a committed relationship. This weird situation makes them feel worthless and frustrated, and it prompts the statements in the song. I probably shouldn’t say much more. Let’s just say it was a romantically ambiguous summer for us both.

If I tried a little harder
Do you think you could learn to love me?
Can you even see
I know that I am not her
But she isn’t me
I’d love to turn you and I to we
You and I to we
(Gone gone, gone gone)
I’m always sittin’ on the sidelines
You make me feel invisible
You say you’re waiting till the time’s right
But I’ma tell you I will wait no more
No more no more
No more no more
Sometimes I wish you that you were smarter
Smart enough to accept what I would give
How do you even live with yourself
It must be getting harder
Now that you know it won’t be long
Till I’m gone gone gone gone gone,
Gone gone gone gone gone gone
Gone gone, gone gone
I’m always sittin’ on the sidelines
You make me feel invisible
You say you’re waiting till the time’s right
But I’ma tell you I will wait no more
No more no more
No more no more
I can’t wait any longer
You can choose to want me but I want her gone
I want her gone
Want her gone
Gone gone gone gone gone
Gone gone gone gone gone
Gone gone gone gone gone
Gone gone gone gone gone
Gone gone gone gone gone
Gone gone
Gone gone
I’m always sittin’ on the sidelines
You make me feel invisible
You say you’re waiting till the time’s right
But I’ma tell you I will wait no more
No more no more
No more no more
